چکیده

This paper is concerned with three interrelated issues on our proposal of double cascades intended to serve as a more realistic theory of twodimensional turbulence. We begin by examining the approach to the KLB limit. We present improved proofs of the result by Fjortoft. We also explain why in that limit the subleading downscale energy cascade and upscale enstrophy cascade are hidden in the energy spectrum. Then we review the experimental evidence from numerical simulations concerning the realizability of the energy and enstrophy cascade. The inverse energy cascade is found to be affected by the presense of a particular solution, and the downscale enstrophy cascade forms only under certain configurations of the dissipative terms. Finally, we amplify the hypothesis that the energy spectrum of the atmosphere reflects a combined downscale cascade of energy and enstrophy. The possibility of the downscale helicity cascade is also considered.

3-D Perturbations in Conformal Turbulence

The effects of three-dimensional perturbations in two-dimensional turbulence are investigated, through a conformal field theory approach. We compute scaling exponents for the energy spectra of enstrophy and energy cascades, in a strong coupling limit, and compare them to the values found in recent experiments. The extension of unperturbed conformal turbulence to the present situation is perform...

Does the subdominant part of the energy spectrum due to downscale energy cascade remain hidden in quasi - geostrophic turbulence ?

In systems governing two-dimensional turbulence, surface quasi-geostrophic turbulence, (more generally αturbulence), two-layer quasi-geostrophic turbulence, etc., there often exist two conservative quadratic quantities, one “energy”-like and one “enstrophy”-like. In a finite inertial range there are in general two spectral fluxes, one associated with each conserved quantity. The energy spectrum...

Constraints on the spectral distribution of energy and enstrophy dissipation in forced two-dimensional turbulence

We study two-dimensional turbulence in a doubly periodic domain driven by a monoscale-like forcing and damped by various dissipation mechanisms of the form νμ(−∆) μ. By “monoscale-like” we mean that the forcing is applied over a finite range of wavenumbers kmin ≤ k ≤ kmax, and that the ratio of enstrophy injection η ≥ 0 to energy injection ε ≥ 0 is bounded by k minε ≤ η ≤ k 2 maxε. Such a forci...

Experimental study and numerical simulation of three dimensional two phase impinging jet flow using anisotropic turbulence model

Hydrodynamic of a turbulent impinging jet on a flat plate has been studied experimentally and numerically. Experiments were conducted for the Reynolds number range of 72000 to 102000 and a fixed jet-to-plate dimensionless distance of H/d=3.5. Based on the experimental setup, a multi-phase numerical model was simulated to predict flow properties of impinging jets using two turbulent models. Mesh...
